It’s been a really wonderful year for me and I would like to thank you all again for your support, love and contribution for making my 2013 amazing. :)

My 2013 Highlights

  • Ishine launched January 2013 and is an outstanding success for every participant! Average weight loss for participants in 6 weeks was 3.2 kilos! Wonderful to see what happens when people start taking real care of themselves, nurture themselves, make healthy choices, have effective movement programs, let go of 'stuff', be motivated and accountable. For me Ishine has been a pivotal professional moment to see my passion and purpose transition into an authentic holistic program which supports and guides people to feel happier and healthy within themselves, make changes, feel achievement, increase energy and connect with me anywhere in the world. From this programs success Ishine Executive was launched in 2013 for corporations and teams.
  • The Great Gatsby – It was an amazing opportunity having a working association within such a unique project. To be invited and to go to the opening night to celebrate an amazing success of my very dear clients & friends. Inspiring journey....... & the best party ever!
  • Being Your Best presentation EY - Wow I've fallen in love with presenting! Thank you to the amazing Jacqueline and Rachael who made this possible.
  • Pilates - Getting my very own Reformer machine for my home studio/coach/ healing space - it's so exciting to do in my own practice and offer another beautiful Pilates experience for clients.
  • Practitioner of Esoteric Medicine - Level 1 and 2.
  • It’s time to shine – Another year of following my passion and purpose with all of my amazing clients. To see you shine even brighter brings such JOY to my world – well done.
  • Personally I've had a wonderful year of really enjoying life – I’m in good health for an old girl and in such a great personal space, my darling parents visiting, a family Christmas, new and dear long term friends feeling loved and supported and of course my darling Sydney :), who is my sunshine, rainbows and stars!

Wow...writing this has been such a great thing to do to celebrate and acknowledge 2013 - go on and have a go, you may be surprised how much you've really done, achieved and enjoyed. :)

Bev talks Pilates

The general thoughts of Pilates as a work out are 'core' & yes our core stability muscle awareness & strength is so important yet Pilates is so much more than a 'core' workout.
The principals that I follow as a teacher are
  • Breathing
  • Axial elongation/core control
  • spine articulation
  • Organisation of head neck & shoulders
  • Weight bearing and Alignment of the Extremities
  • Movement Integration
So perhaps you can see in these 6 principals that there is so much more to Pilates.
For me to see someone be able to move their body in harmony, painfree & effectively is priceless as this is quality of life.
Every 'body' is different having unique needs & concerns. Pilates for me is the most gentle & effective movement that benefits everyone. There are many modifications to make exercises 'do able' 'safe' and so you can get the benefits you need.
Cueing from your instructor should always involve all the relevant principals (from above) and also give you an emphasis of each exercise so you can focus on the correct intention.

Pilates is a quiet & focussed work out that brings almost a medative effect along with a feeling of rejuvenising rather than exhaustion.  Yet at times it can be challenging. Pilates isn't about 'going hard' 'feel the burn' and pain.  So for some of you used to those feeling it may take awhile to adjust but change your mindset and check in with your intention of why you are doing Pilates.  Also if your instructor is taking you to these places then perhaps they are operating on different principals. When you do  surrender to the gentleness an inner sense of empowerment & strength will shine.
Words that in my opinion shouldn't be heard in a Pilates session
  • Brace
  • Switch on
  • Flatten back
  • pull belly button into spine
  • No pain no gain
  • Chin on chest
  • Hold your breath
  • Collapse
Feelings that shouldn't to be felt in Pilates
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Neck exhaustion
  • Shoulder pain
  • Muscle exhaustion
  • Pressure in your belly
  • Bulging belly
  • stress
if so please stop and ask for assistance

Move & Groove in May

I couldn’t help but smile and fall in love with nana.  Yet there was more.....It got me thinking, when was the last time I felt like dancing spontaneously without a care in the world? Some of you know I am a particular lover of music and dance; I can even remember dancing as a young child with free abandonment in front of my parent’s patio doors as that was the best mirror I could find!  Does this sound familiar to any of you? How about singing into hairbrush & even playing the air guitar?? So why do we stop doing what brings us such joy?

'A Year from now you will wish you had started today'

A very powerful statement isnt it?

Got you thinking?

So what can you START TODAY to make your health, happiness & energy a priority?
Some thing that I see & hear  very often is the 'all or nothing approach' - start out doing 200% of everything... and then give up on yourself saying too its too hard - is this you?

So my suggestion would be to start with one or two smart things
Some simple & effective 'things' to DO TODAY
  • Increase incidental exercise
  • increase water
  • remove refined sugars
  • get moving 3 - 6 activities/workouts/huff & puff a week 
  • Hire a personal trainer
  • focus on portion size
  • Take a walk after evening meal with your partner
  • reduce or cutdown on alcohol
  • Take your lunch to work everyday

Breath & Take Your Time

'Am I moving too slow?' is one of the most asked questions I get from clients.

I was participating in a Pilates class this morning & the person next to me......... wow.... it was exhausting to see how stressed they were, how punishing they moved their body and the force of each breath.... I wish they could have taken a moment & listened to the teacher who was constantly saying 'slow down'

I was almost hyperventilating with they're constant loud breath, jerky crazy movements...... Have any of you felt that?

I constantly had to keep bringing my focus back to me, my practise & my breath.

'Bless them' I thought, they are so wanting to do the 'right thing' to 'work hard' to ...... but what I saw was someone that was in a  'racy' 'stressed' place that was only punishing their body harder and harder. Sadly they were missing out on there session being effective, efficient & getting results.

I find with my clients that because we are living in a fast paced world  that learning to slow things down not only brings calm, energy & focus yet also brings more and more physical challenge. It's so much harder to do an exercise slowly & controlled

Our bodies are very clever & adaptable especially with pain.   Not all pain is bad, as my yoga teacher says 'pain is giving birth, a broken bone .... what you are feeling  in this pose is the feeling of getting strong'.- wow! This made me giggle... & it also shifted my mind set!

As humans we feel that the feeling of getting strong is one to be avoided.  With this avoidance becomes fast movements, giving up exercise, returning to rest quickly, doing exercises incorrectly as we don't enjoy a little discomfort etc

Your breath is your best friend, it is your breath that calms you, it is your breath that brings focus, clarity, lifts you away from the 'pain', brings greater concentration & meditation (the zone for exercisers). 

Coach Carter says...'Quality is better than Quanitity' 

Your easy & simple take home practise this week

-  Breath slow & deep into your lungs 5 times before you start your exercise class/session/run etc
leave work, family, problems, stresses behind after these 5 breaths - this is your time
-  Slow your movements down by counting 1 - 10 in one repetition  - weight work, stretches, abdominals, push ups etc and notice how much more energy, focus & strength it takes
-  Get to feel the feelings of getting stronger & learn how to rise above it in your mind - this is empowering
- Take 5 deep slow breaths after stretching and feel energised about rest of day
